A Hazel Park High School student was taken into custody on Thursday after a gun was found in his backpack. The discovery followed an anonymous tip through the OK2Say tip line. School resource detectives and the assistant principal interviewed the student, who denied having a weapon, as per CBS News Detroit.

Initial searches of his locker and person found nothing. After being informed he could not return to school during the investigation, the student remembered a backpack in a classroom. A detective searched it and found the gun, leading to the student's arrest and transfer to Oakland County Children's Village, according to FOX 2 Detroit

Hazel Park police conducted a precautionary sweep of the high school with a police canine and additional officers, though no further threats were identified. "Out of an abundance of caution and support for all, the Hazel Park Police will have additional officers on hand to make sure staff and students feel safe," the department stated. The investigation is ongoing, with findings to be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges. Police reported that the situation has been contained and there is no ongoing threat, as stated by FOX 2 Detroit.
