The New York City Police Department is conducting an investigation following the recovery of human remains off the shore of Manhattan. The NYPD Harbor Unit came upon a floating suitcase in the East River, near Governors Island around 5:30 p.m. yesterday. As per NY Daily News, inside was the headless, limbless torso of an adult man.
The suitcase was brought to Pier 16 on South Street, near John Street in the Financial District, where the city’s Emergency Medical Services were summoned. Despite the absence of certain body parts, which may complicate the identification process, the city's Medical Examiner's office will work to identify the remains and determine the cause of death. According to ABC7NY, officials declared the individual to be dead upon examination.
At this time, the authorities have not released additional information about the deceased person or the circumstances leading to their grim demise. As is standard practice in such cases, the Medical Examiner’s findings will also aim to clarify the circumstances under which the individual died.
