An 86-year-old woman, Yvonne Mira of Hilo, passed away after a traffic collision in Hilo. Mira was pronounced dead on Monday, after sustaining injuries in a crash on Thursday last week. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.

According to the Hawaiʻi Police Department release, the crash occurred on Kaumana Drive when a 2007 Honda Pilot, driven by 84-year-old Ken Rosene, went off the road, struck a rock embankment, and critically injured Mira, who was the passenger. The vehicle blocked the westbound lane, and Mira was found unresponsive at the scene. Witnesses provided statements to the police regarding the accident.

The Hawai‘i Fire Department (HFD) responded to the emergency call at 4:54 p.m. and extricated Mira. She showed signs of life but was unresponsive verbally. Mira was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and later transferred to Queen’s Hospital on Oahu, where she died.

While Mira’s injuries were fatal, Rosene also suffered injuries and was treated at Hilo Benioff Medical Center before being discharged. Afterward, Rosene was arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant and first-degree negligent injury, though he was released pending investigation. After Mira’s death, the investigation was upgraded to negligent homicide. This marks the 6th traffic fatality on Hawai‘i Island in 2025. The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit, led by Officer Laurence Davis, is continuing the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.
