Honolulu will have calm weather in the coming days with light winds and dry conditions. A Pacific jet over the north central Pacific is causing high pressure over the Hawaiian Islands. The trade wind belt is mostly south of the state, with a surface ridge north of Kauai. This will lead to moderate trade winds in the eastern areas and light winds with afternoon sea breezes and nighttime land breezes in the west. The National Weather Service reports that "active mid-level subsidence, light winds, and no apparent upstream moisture source" are responsible for the dry weather.
A ridge north of the islands is causing southeasterly winds on Kauai and Oahu, with light to moderate easterly winds on Maui and Hawaii Counties. Some clouds and showers may affect windward and mauka areas, leading to occasional marginal visual flight rules VFR conditions. Most areas will have normal VFR conditions. No aviation weather warnings AIRMETs are in effect or expected soon, according to the National Weather Service.
Moderate to fresh easterly trade winds will continue, with a ridge weakening as a shallow cold front approaches from the northwest between Thursday and Friday. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for Big Island and Maui County through Thursday morning, with a possible extension into the afternoon. A west-northwest swell will subside this evening, with another swell expected Thursday morning, likely increasing surf heights on north and west-facing shores to advisory levels. A High Surf Advisory remains in place until 6 PM HST Thursday for areas including the leeward coast of Niihau, Kauai, Waianae Coast, and Oahu’s north shore, and may extend to north Maui.
