Tragedy struck the South Sam Houston Parkway East last Friday evening when a multi-vehicle hit-and-run incident claimed the life of a 44-year-old man and left several others injured, as the Houston Police Department continues its search for the drivers responsible.
According to the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant M. Sudduth and Officer R. Guzman, the accident occurred near the intersection with Sabo Road when an 18-wheeler truck slammed into the back of a silver Chevrolet Cavalier stopped at a red light, setting off a domino effect that involved a black Lexus RX350, a white Chevrolet Tahoe, a blue Ford Crown Victoria, and a Toyota of unknown model. As per the Houston Police Department, the force of the impact led to multiple collisions. The drivers of the 18-wheeler and the Toyota fled the scene without offering aid to the victims.
Houston Fire Department paramedics arrived at the scene, where they pronounced the driver of the Cavalier dead. A nine-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the Cavalier, was taken to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. The woman driving the Lexus has been hospitalized in critical condition. Other vehicle occupants sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported by paramedics to area hospitals for treatment.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be confirmed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
