The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) kicked off Black History Month with a nod to the state's Black community, unveiling a campaign to honor and empower Black Illinoisans. The initiative, steered by the DCEO's Office of Economic Equity & Empowerment (OE3), will feature a mix of virtual and in-person events to spotlight Black businesses and leaders throughout February. A dedicated webpage has also been launched to serve as a hub for event details and resources for Black-owned businesses.

"Black-owned businesses are at the heart of so many communities across Illinois, driving economic growth and enriching our state's legacy of entrepreneurship and innovation," Governor JB Pritzker stated in a press release. This year's theme, “Legacy and Impact,” underscores the importance of the economic and cultural contributions made by Black Illinoisans. Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the administration's commitment to dismantling barriers and expanding opportunities for Black entrepreneurs throughout the state.

In response to the unique struggles that businesses of color face, the DCEO has pledged itself to establishing a more equitable business environment. This includes various initiatives and resources specifically tailored for minority-owned businesses. "With over 170,000 business across the state, Illinois' Black businesses are an essential part of our economy," DCEO Director Kristin Richards explained. These efforts reflect an ongoing interest in promoting inclusivity within Illinois' broader economic landscape.

The OE3 is at the forefront of the State's efforts to foster an inclusive business ecosystem, particularly for communities historically hindered by systemic inequalities. As part of the campaign, the Illinois Office of Tourism is sharing Black History Month activities, and attractions, and highlighting Black Illinois Made Makers. Events like the online discussion on financial resources and a panel discussion featuring Black business leaders are intended to not just celebrate Black History Month, but also to provide tangible support and information to the community.

Attendees are encouraged to register for events such as the "Online with OE3 - Overview of Financial Resources for Small Businesses" set for February 5, and the "Legacy and Impact - Black History Month Panel Discussion" on February 20. Details and registration for these events, and others, can be found on the DCEO website, ensuring that participants can easily access these free resources designed to support the growth and prosperity of Black-owned businesses in Illinois.
