A man was rescued after jumping off a bridge onto the ice of the Ipswich River in Massachusetts last night. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., and the man was found to be conscious and breathing after falling approximately 16 feet from the County Street Bridge onto an icy shelf in the river. The location where he landed was perilously close—just three feet away from open water, as reported by Boston 25 News.
First responders, upon receiving the call, immediately set out to carefully save the man from his precarious position. Firefighters Mike Sikora and Keith LeBlanc from the Ipswich Fire Department donned Mustang ice rescue suits to safely navigate the treacherous conditions. Sikora was able to assess the male's condition after reaching him on the ice. In a critical move to ensure the man's safety, Sikora applied a cervical collar on the man to stabilize his spine—a detail noted by NBC Boston. The rescue team was successful in their efforts to remove the man from danger.
Post-rescue, the victim was transported to Beverly Hospital, where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The collaborative effort between the police and fire departments was essential in the success of the operation and ensured that the outcome was not grievously worse.
"The members of the Ipswich Fire and Police Departments worked together under dangerous, dark, and cold conditions to effect the rescue of this victim. These members are to be commended for their actions in conducting this high-risk, low-frequency operation," said Ipswich Fire Chief Paul Parisi and Police Chief Paul Nikas in a joined statement, as reported by both Boston 25 News and NBC Boston. The Chiefs' words serve to underscore the risk and professionalism involved in such a rescue operation.
Further details on the incident have yet to be released, and updates will follow as more information is made available. The identity of the man has not been disclosed. The perseverance and swift actions of the Ipswich first responders provide a stark reminder of the power of community and the dedication of those who serve within it to safeguard lives, even in the most perilous of circumstances.
