Jack-knifed big rig traffic crash @ US-101 s/b, S/ of Sierra Point Prkwy in Brisbane, CA is currently affecting the #3 & #4 lanes. These lanes will remain closed with an ETO 12 pm, as Caltrans begins repairs to the damaged bridge structure along the right shoulder. pic.twitter.com/kN1Z6Rb10b
The chaos unfolded around 5 a.m. when an 18-wheeler, reportedly cut off by another driver, leaked 160 gallons of diesel fuel after crashing. The big rig's collision with a fence near Caltrain tracks also prompted delays from San Francisco to South San Francisco. While lanes #1 and #2 are now open on southbound US-101, vehicles trying to reach the San Francisco International Airport were impacted, with authorities urging drivers to take I-280 instead. As per Caltrans, the environmental threat was contained, preventing diesel from entering local waterways.
In a report by KTVU, traffic reporter Sal Castaneda described the situation as a "ridiculous day" with fuel spills and obstacles creating hazards across Bay Area freeways. CHP Officer Mark Andrews detailed the swift action by Caltrans crews to address the potential environmental hazards. Meanwhile, SkyFox captured footage of ongoing repairs to approximately 110 feet of bridge railing.
According to that same report by KTVU, no injuries were reported in the San Francisco incident, which was a fortunate outcome amidst the wreckage.
