In a recent turnaround, the Hawai‘i Department of Health (DOH) has given the green light for Paradise Supermart Fast Food & Catering to resume operations. The Maui Food Safety Branch issued a green "pass" placard during a follow-up inspection on Thursday, signaling that the facility met the health and safety standards required to be back in business. Located on East Wakea Ave. in Kahului, Maui, Paradise Supermart Fast Food & Catering, operated by Paradise Asian Foods Inc., has addressed the issues pointed out in a previous DOH check.
During a routine inspection on February 5, Paradise Supermart was cited for multiple violations, including grease and food debris build-up, evidence of cockroach and fly activity, and inadequate refrigeration temperatures. However, the establishment acted swiftly to rectify these concerns. By the time of the follow-up visit, the DOH confirmed that all critical violations had been corrected, with a statement obtained by the recent DOH news release noting that "All grease and food debris accumulation were removed from kitchen surfaces and a cleaning schedule was established."
The reopening of the establishment comes with stringent ongoing requirements from the DOH. They insist that Paradise Supermart continue its collaboration with a pest control company, conducting weekly pest control treatments over the next month before moving to a biweekly schedule. Additionally, all completed work orders must be submitted to the DOH for review. Managers at Paradise Supermart must ensure they maintain control over critical food safety requirements to avoid any future violations.
The DOH Food Safety Branch is adamant about its role in safeguarding public health by education and regulation of industry standards. Regular inspections, investigations into foodborne illnesses and potential adulteration, and working closely with food businesses are among the strategies to maintain safety standards. As outlined in the news release, the branch's food safety specialists work "to ensure safe food preparation and employee hygiene practices."
