Xuan Thanh Vo has been sentenced to life in prison in Kalamazoo County after being convicted of first-degree open murder in the 2022 death of 65-year-old Sandra Villarreal in a Walmart parking lot. According to WWMT, Judge Pamela Lightvoet delivered the sentence on Wednesday, stating that Vo used his car to carry out a planned act.
During the court session, Villarreal’s family spoke about their loss. Her granddaughter Ree Adams called her "best friend," and her daughter Jessica Donovan said to Vo, "you ripped her heart and all of ours," as stated by WOODTV. When asked if he wanted to speak before sentencing, Vo simply said "no," as mentioned by WWMT.
Vo has been sentenced to life in prison and ordered to pay restitution, including funeral costs, though the final amount is not yet determined. During the investigation, Vo told the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office that he decided to run someone over due to anger and loneliness after a breakup. He chose a Walmart parking lot because it was empty, allowing him to accelerate his car. Assistant Prosecutor Chelsea Huber described the crime as one of the worst she had seen, telling WOODTV, "The planning beforehand, executing what he set out to accomplish that day—it’s horrifying." While the legal process has ended with Vo's sentencing.
