In a move meant to increase survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest, the Kaua‘i Fire Department, in collaboration with the County of Kaua‘i, has launched PulsePoint Respond, a mobile app that alerts CPR-trained bystanders to nearby cardiac emergencies.
The app aims to facilitate swift bystander assistance pending the arrival of professional responders, KFD Fire Chief Michael Gibson recognized the critical contribution citizens can make by saying, “The PulsePoint Respond app enhances our ability to respond quickly and effectively in the critical moments following a sudden cardiac arrest, and we are proud to bring this lifesaving technology to Kaua‘i. Mahalo to the Office of the Mayor, Kaua‘i Lifeguard Association, Hanalei Initiative, and the Kaua‘i County Council for their support in bringing PulsePoint to the island,” as noted by the recent county announcement.
Designed to notify individuals trained in CPR and willing to assist during an emergency, PulsePoint Respond directs them to the nearest public Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The app is freely available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. As heart disease remains a leading cause of death, its launch aligns with American Heart Month, emphasizing the importance of heart health and immediate intervention during cardiac events, which can significantly increase survival chances. The PulsePoint platform only sends alerts after the activation of the emergency 9-1-1 system, ensuring that these community-driven responses augment rather than interfere with professional emergency services, as mentioned on the county's official website.
