A 27-year-old Lakeland man has been charged with federal firearms violations. Taqiy Lewis, a convicted felon, potentially faces up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted of possessing a firearm and ammunition. This announcement comes following a series of investigations linked to a fatal shooting event that occurred in December 2020, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The charges stem from a tragic incident that took place on Christmas Eve back in 2020 outside the home of a 70-year-old woman, identified as M.C. in Lakeland. During an exchange of gunfire, allegedly including Lewis, M.C. was struck and killed, and a 13-year-old child, referred to as A.L., was wounded. The complaint notes that it wasn't until an unrelated probe two years later that authorities recovered the Kahr CM9 9mm pistol that Lewis allegedly used in the shooting.
Forensic testing conducted through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) linked the weapon to the casings and projectiles found at the crime scene and M.C.'s body. This evidential breakthrough highlights the utility of integrated ballistics in solving crimes long after they occur. "A complaint is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty," the Justice Department statement reminds the public.
The multi-agency effort, bringing together the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Lakeland Police Department, underscores a commitment to collaborative law enforcement under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN). PSN aims, to reduce violent crime and gun violence through partnerships and strategic enforcement. Since its reinforcement in 2021, PSN has focused on fostering trust within communities, backing organizations that prevent violence, and evaluating the efficacy of these efforts.
This case is positioned as yet another reflection of federal authorities' determination to address violent offenders and gun crime. Assistant United States Attorney Diego F. Novaes will prosecute the case for the U.S. The comprehensive strategy against violent crime extends beyond immediate legal proceedings and into broader community engagement and preventative measures, showcasing a layered approach to public safety.
