It's a time of somber reflection for the Las Cruces Police Department and the community as they mark one year since the tragic death of Officer Jonah Hernandez. Slain in the line of duty, Hernandez is remembered not only for his service but also for the profound loss felt by his loved ones. As reported by the Las Cruces Police Department, Chief Jeremy Story expressed the collective mourning, stating "Not one day has passed that Jonah is not in our memories, in our hearts and actions as we continue to heal from that painful loss."

Leaving behind a widow and two young children, ages 11 and 3, the memory of Hernandez is being honored through various departmental events. A songwriter's round was held on Jan. 31, featuring former LCPD officer turned country music artist Frank Ray, and other musicians who performed for around 250 family members and first responders. Again, showing their strength, it was shared by the chief that the fallen officer's family "continue to display kindness and provide inspiration as we move forward together," as obtained by the Las Cruces Police Department, despite having every right to feel otherwise.

In a more personal gesture, LCPD members, and some City staff, will gather privately on Feb. 11 to celebrate and honor Hernandez’s legacy. This year, the department will also partake in the New Mexico Fallen Officer Memorial Run to show solidarity and remembrance for their fallen colleague and other officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The event, which is open to the public, takes place on Feb. 16, starting from Las Cruces City Hall.

Officer Hernandez's end of watch came unexpectedly on Feb. 11, 2024, while responding to a call about trespassing. After being stabbed multiple times, a witness intervened and aided the officer, ultimately neutralizing the assailant. Hernandez, unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center, conveyed in shock, officers arrived quickly at the scene in an attempt to save their colleague. Hernandez was 35 years old at the time of his death and had served with the LCPD for two years. His funeral was held on Feb. 21, 2024, in El Paso, Texas, where he was laid to rest.
