Los Angeles residents are navigating a variety of weather and environmental challenges this week, starting with a dense fog advisory that went into effect yesterday evening and continuing until this morning, according to the National Weather Service. Visibility has reduced to a quarter mile or less in areas, significantly impacting driving conditions due to dense fog enveloping coastal and inland regions of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties.
With the fog lifting, neighborhoods across the Los Angeles area were alerted to an air quality issue requiring a mandatory wood-burning ban for residents. Leaving many areas with low visibility, including highly frequented locations such as Santa Monica, Long Beach, and Downtown Los Angeles, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has extended a mandatory wood-burning ban as part of their No-Burn rule. As per information provided by the weather advisory, the ban prohibits the burning of wood, pellets, and manufactured fire logs in any indoor or outdoor wood-burning device to mitigate health risks associated with fine particle pollution.
The air quality alert and restrictions extend to most areas within the South Coast Air Basin, including parts of Orange County and non-desert portions of Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. The advisory details that there are exemptions. Homes that rely solely on wood as a heat source, low-income households, and those without natural gas service are not subject to the ban.
Looking ahead, the weather forecast from the National Weather Service for Los Angeles predicts a high of 72 degrees today, with clouds gradually clearing. However, the rain is likely to start on Tuesday afternoon, bringing potentially a tenth to a quarter of an inch of precipitation and continuing intermittently through Friday. To assist residents and visitors in planning, the forecast includes a detailed daily outlook, and suggests adapting to the changing weather conditions, which include patchy dense fog at night followed by several days of rain.
