A significant blaze erupted in Lynn, Massachusetts, last night, tearing through multiple buildings, including a church and a residential structure. The Lynn Fire Department quickly responded as the inferno raged on Estes and Chestnut Streets. NBC Boston reported that firefighters had to contend with collapsed floors and a compromised roof amid "tough conditions" exacerbated by the cold and windy weather.
The challenge for the firefighters was amplified as they had to quickly adapt to not only put out the flames but also ensure safety under the perilous environment the fire created. According to Lynn Fire Chief Dan Sullivan in a statement obtained by NBC Boston, "When we arrived, the winds were so fierce, the embers were blowing across the main street here." Such conditions instigated an almost complete evacuation of the block to prevent further tragedy.
Despite the severe damage, there were no injuries reported, although six individuals have been displaced from their homes due to the event. The response included efforts by the Red Cross and Salvation Army, who stepped in to aid those affected by the blaze. Both organizations were at the scene to assist in the aftermath, as noted by NBC Boston.
Moving forward, the investigation is still in its nascent stages. "It's too early to tell where or how the fire started," Sullivan told CBS News Boston. Firefighters tackled the roaring flames using aerial ladders, a strategy born out of necessity as Sullivan detailed, "The floors were collapsing, so that building is pretty dangerous at this point." Concerns still loom around a teetering chimney, and efforts are focused on keeping civilians safely away from any hazards.
Supporting firefighting crews from several communities were called in, as water supply became an issue. Firefighting teams had to lay hose lines from multiple streets away, compounding the logistical difficulties faced during the operation, as reported by CBS News Boston. As the investigation continues, the full extent of the damages and the origin of the fire remain to be determined.
