A routine traffic stop in Oldham Co. led to a major drug seizure by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) last week. DPS officers confiscated a sizeable haul of THC and marijuana products, including a stash of vape cartridges that has been making headlines. The seizure took place on February 25, around 2:45 p.m., involved a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica that was pulled over on I-40 near Vega for a traffic violation. The stop quickly escalated when the driver exhibited nervous behavior and officers detected the distinct aroma of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

DPS K-9 unit Tex was called to thoroughly search the vehicle and didn't fail to perform, promptly alerting to the presence of contraband. According to the official DPS report, the dog's keen sense of smell led to the discovery of multiple cardboard boxes in the car's rear, which were found to contain over 5,700 THC vape cartridges. The seizure didn't stop there; officers also found 30 jars of THC butter and 16 jars of green marijuana. These amounted to over 25 pounds of THC oil and more than 5 pounds combined of THC butter and green marijuana. Allegedly, the confiscated drugs were being transported from New Mexico to Texas.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Gatlan Mitchell from Brackettville, Texas, now faces serious charges. Mitchell was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at Oldham Co. Jail. The charges against him include the manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. These offenses are considered felonies under Texas law and suggest that the ramifications for Mitchell could be significant.

While proponents of cannabis legalization continue to actively advocate for a change in policy, incidents like this are a stark reminder of the strict drug laws that are still in place across many states. The zeal with which DPS officials conducted the seizure is indicative of the state's commitment to uphold existing drug laws, even as debate rages on to possibly change them. This arrest serves to also remind those who might wish to quickly capitalize off the increasingly profitable THC market that they must carefully navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding controlled substances in Texas and beyond.
