A false bomb threat at an East Lansing Meijer led to a man's arrest on Monday evening after an eventful confrontation with police that involved tasers, a mental health crisis, and the discovery of fireworks but no explosives, officials said.
According to the Lansing State Journal, the East Lansing Police Department reported that the incident began when officers were investigating an alleged assault on a child. The arrested individual had approached them near the Meijer store on Lake Lansing Road, claiming he had witnessed the assault. It was during the subsequent interaction with Meijer employees in the parking lot that the man's demeanor escalated to making verbal threats and claiming he had a bomb in his vehicle.
Police actions included using a taser to detain the resistant man, who, during the arrest, claimed to have a bomb in his car. In response, the ELPD directed patrons and staff to the rear of the Meijer store for safety. A Michigan State University K-9 team signaled "a potential issue." Still, the vehicle search conducted by the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad revealed only fireworks, deeming the man's bomb threat to be false, as reported by WLNS in a news article.
The aftermath of the chaotic episode left the suspect in police custody, facing a possible charge of resisting and obstructing, while the Ingham County Prosecutors Office is considering additional charges. Furthermore, upon his arrest, the man divulged his suicidal state, bringing to light the concern of a mental health crisis at play.
