An 85-year-old woman in the Bronx was the victim of a theft when a man stole her shopping cart, which contained over $40,000 in cashier's checks, an iPhone, and several debit and credit cards. The incident occurred near Marion Avenue and East 195th Street, as reported by Gothamist. According to the NYPD, the theft took place around noon on Wednesday, with the suspect fleeing on foot down East 195th Street.
The elderly woman, who had just completed errands and left the bank, was not physically injured but was shaken by the incident. Grand larceny remains a notable issue for the 52nd precinct of the NYPD, with trends reflecting figures similar to those from the previous year. According to police data, the precinct saw a 20% increase in grand larceny cases from 2023, with 880 incidents reported the previous year.
Authorities continue their search for the perpetrator and have released surveillance footage to the public, seeking assistance in identifying the man responsible for the heist. The suspect was last seen clad in a black sweatshirt with the hood pulled up over his head, as highlighted by the New York Post.
