A man suspected of kidnapping died in Memphis Police Department (MPD) custody after experiencing what was described as a "medical emergency" early this morning. According to an Action News 5 report, the incident took place just before 2 a.m. in the Hamilton area on Tayner Street. MPD officers had responded to a disturbance call and took the man into custody shortly before the medical issue arose.
After the suspect was detained, police officers attempted to quickly render aid, and they immediately called the Memphis Fire Department for further assistance. The man was subsequently transported to Methodist University Hospital in critical condition, where he later passed away. As per Local Memphis, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has taken up the mantle to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading up to the man's death.
In a public statement obtained by Local Memphis, a TBI spokesperson stated, "On Tuesday, February 4th, at the request of the 30th Judicial District Deputy District Attorney Paul Hagerman, TBI agents began investigating the circumstances leading to the in-custody death of a man in the 1600 block of Rayner street in Memphis. At this time, the investigation remains active and ongoing."
Further reports indicated the deceased man was involved in an alleged kidnapping prior to his arrest. MPD confirmed the kidnapping investigation regarding the suspect and a female victim is still continuing. Details surrounding the cause of the medical emergency or the man's identity have not been publicly disclosed at this stage. The MPD and TBI have not released additional information as the case develops.
