A routine response to a crash took a dangerous turn for a Maple Grove police officer last week. The officer, now released from hospital, was attending to an accident when his squad car was struck by another motorist, leading to injuries. According to CBS News Minnesota, the force of the impact was such that it sent the officer's car careening into him.
The Maple Grove Police Department has shared an in-squad camera footage on social media which captures the life-threatening ordeal the officer suffered. In the video, after the collision, the squad car spins into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing semi-trucks and other vehicles. "Pay attention, slow down, and move over!" the department urged in a post on their Facebook page.
The move-over law, designed to protect emergency responders and law enforcement officers in such situations, requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes to provide a safe buffer for those working roadside emergencies.
