The Marietta Police Department is grappling with the loss of a distinguished member of its team. According to posts on the department's Facebook page and an article by FOX5 Atlanta, retired K9 Atos, a dog who served in various capacities including narcotics detection and criminal apprehension, passed away yesterday morning. Born on October 29, 2013, Atos began his tenure with the department in March 2015. The cause of death for the former K9 officer has not been disclosed by officials.
Throughout his career, K9 Atos had initially partnered with Officer Ray Figueroa, and after Figueroa's promotion in 2019, Atos was quickly to start working with Officer Aaron Johnson. The partnership between Atos and Johnson persisted until the K9's retirement in June 2022, after which Atos went to live with Johnson's family. A statement on the department's Facebook page, as reported by WSB-TV, described Atos as "loyal, dedicated, goofy, and sweet."
The police department's tribute to Atos emphasizes the bond between K9 units and their handlers, as well as the integral role these animals play in law enforcement. The social media announcement reminisced on Atos's personality and contribution, dubbing him a "fine police officer and a good boy." Reflecting on his life, they wished him peace "over that rainbow bridge." Both FOX5 Atlanta and WSB-TV mirrored this sentiment in their coverage of Atos's passing.
Known for his skills in evidence recovery and tracking, K9 Atos was a valued asset to the Marietta Police Department throughout his years of service. His passing leaves behind not just his handler Officer Johnson and his family, but a department and community who recognized and celebrated his abilities and character. As the Marietta Police Department continues to mourn, they have yet to publicly share additional details regarding Atos's cause of death.
