In the County of Maui, officials are increasing security following a rise in thefts in Lahaina's fire-affected neighborhoods. The County announced that security cameras will be installed immediately in key areas. The cameras are intended to help prevent further thefts and support law enforcement in ongoing investigations, according to the County of Maui.
The cameras will serve as a temporary measure until permanent safety infrastructure is rebuilt in areas affected by fires. Mayor Richard Bissen said, "Our community has endured unimaginable loss, and we will not allow perpetrators to exploit this tragedy." Residents have expressed concerns about security, prompting the County to take action, as reported by the County of Maui.
The County of Maui, in partnership with Hawaiian Electric Company, is restoring street lighting in dark areas to improve safety. The work is ongoing and expected to finish soon. Residents can report concerns or suspicious activities to the Maui Police Department at (808) 244-6400. More information is available on the County of Maui's website.
