As egg prices continue to create sticker shock across the nation, NBC Chicago reports that McDonald's is bucking the trend by setting aside potential surcharges for its popular breakfast items. The fast-food behemoth is gearing up to celebrate "National Egg McMuffin Day" on March 2, marking the 50th anniversary of the beloved breakfast sandwich with a throwback deal that's sure to attract attention: a $1 Egg McMuffin or Sausage McMuffin with Egg, exclusively through the McDonald's app.
This one-day event that falls on a Sunday is packed with nostalgia and savings, but the deals don't end there. McDonald's is reportedly extending the joy with a BOGO Sausage McMuffin with Egg promotion running from March 3-30 when ordered via McDelivery through their app. They're also broadening their breakfast repertoire, as NBC Chicago adds that McDonald's bagel sandwiches, featuring options like Bacon, Egg & Cheese and Steak, Egg & Cheese, are now available at restaurants nationwide.
In a statement marked by confidence in their market position, Joe Erlinger, McDonald’s USA President, declared, "At McDonald’s, breakfast isn’t just a meal; it’s a cherished tradition and cornerstone of our brand." This sentiment echoes the company's determination to reinforce its status as a go-to breakfast destination amid an industry-wide push to mitigate the impact of skyrocketing egg prices caused by a countrywide shortage.
Michael Gonda, McDonald's North America's chief impact officer, took to LinkedIn to underscore their stance, stating, "Unlike others making news recently, you definitely WON’T see McDonald’s USA issuing surcharges on eggs, which are 100% cage-free and sourced in the U.S." This proclamation comes on the heels of a challenging period for the company which, as NBC News notes, included its worst quarterly sales dip since the pandemic. Yet, there seems to be a silver lining, with shares up by 6% year to date, a performance that outshines broader market indexes.
