Marking a century of operation, Meacham International Airport is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The airport stands as a significant piece of aviation history in Fort Worth, beginning as the Fort Worth Municipal Airport in 1925. It was later named Meacham Field to honor the contributions of Mayor Henry C. Meacham. According to the City of Fort Worth, Meacham put forward $1,200 to build a caretaker’s cottage on the site.
This pivotal airport ushered in the era of scheduled airline flights from Texas, with its first departure to Oklahoma City in 1928. This is significant, not merely historical but also operational. Meacham has transformed into the sixth busiest airport in Texas and the second for general aviation, clocking over 210,000 operations in 2024.
Meacham International Airport is partnering with the Fort Worth Aviation Museum for the "Hops and Props" 2025 event as the centennial commemorations approach. Sponsored by Lockheed Martin, the event will unfold from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the museum at 3300 Ross Ave., Fort Worth. Hops and Props combines food, craft beer, live music, and activities appropriate for all ages, breathing life into the community’s collective appreciation for aviation.
A high-flying video has also been produced to showcase the airport’s rich history, milestones, and overall contribution to the Fort Worth aviation scene. The public is encouraged to engage with the airport's legacy by viewing this special 100th-anniversary video, highlighting everything from Meacham's origins to its current stature in the aviation industry.
