A Memphis firefighter-paramedic sustained injuries in a vehicle crash on Wednesday morning, involving an ambulance of the Memphis Fire Department. The incident occurred before 10:45 a.m. on southbound I-240 at Norris Rd., as per Local Memphis. The firefighter was reportedly taken to the hospital in a non-critical condition following the crash.
Several lanes on I-240 southbound were closed due to the accident, which involved the ambulance truck colliding with a pole on the interstate median, detailed images from WREG crews at the scene. The Memphis Police Department has shut down traffic lanes 1 and 3, but the middle lane remained open. They have encouraged motorists to find alternative routes while the clearance of the crash site is underway, said WREG.
Icy conditions are believed to be the cause of the accident, which came in the wake of an overnight snowstorm that left 1-3 inches of snow in the Mid-South area. This weather event has led to multiple wrecks throughout the morning due to winter conditions affecting the roadways, Action News 5 reported. Caution and vigilance on the roads have been repeatedly advised by officials in light of these conditions.
As the community awaits further updates, the identity of the injured firefighter-paramedic has not been released. The Memphis Fire Department confirmed that one of its own received treatments for injuries on the scene before being transported to the emergency room.
