The Metropolitan Council has officially adopted Imagine 2050, a regional planning guide focused on spearheading equitable and resilient growth across the seven-county metro region of the Twin Cities. Announced in February, this landmark plan envisions a future where policies around clean water, housing affordability, transit access, and regional parks are realized for the betterment of local communities over the next 30 years.
The expansive document covers a plethora of topics, from housing and transportation to land use and water resource management. "Today, the Twin Cities region leads the nation in many quality-of-life areas," said Metropolitan Council Chair Charlie Zelle, according to the Metropolitan Council's official statement. He adds, “You don't get results like that without a plan," highlighting the importance, and success of long-term strategic planning in the region.
The ambitious Imagine 2050 guides land development to foster community connections, champion natural resource conservation, and bolster climate resilience, with a dedication to establishing an equitable transportation network and expanding housing accessibility. The plan promises to guide a transportation system that links people, neighborhoods, and businesses effectively and safely through collaborative efforts.
The plan extends to include progressive housing policies intended to diversify housing choices and ownership while confronting historical housing inequities. In terms of recreation, it intensifies collaboration with regional park agencies to safeguard natural spaces and recreation facilities against climate change and future demands. Zelle expanded, "For the last four years, we've been talking to locally elected officials, nonprofits, neighborhood organizations, and people in our communities about the kind of future they want to build." He remarked on the extensive community discussions that shaped the foundation of Imagine 2050.
Now that the plan has been adopted, the real work begins. The framework requires all 181 cities and townships within the region, along with the seven counties, to curate their 10-year comprehensive plans that align with the shared vision of Imagine 2050.
