The Metropolitan Police Department is urgently piecing together the details of a homicide that rattled the vicinity of Union Station's parking garage. The unsettling event took place this Monday, February 10, with officers responding to a call at approximately 4:37 p.m. It was at the bustling transport hub, set at 50 Massachusetts Avenue, Northeast, where, according to a statement given by the MPD, Amtrak Police had reported hearing gunshots close to the bus waiting area.
The arrival of First District officers saw them discover a male victim, unresponsive and lacking any signs of life near the parking garage's escalators. Without hesitation, the officials attempted to fiercely administer lifesaving efforts, maintaining their resolve until DC Fire and EMS could take over. Despite these exertions, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The MPD's Homicide Branch has since obtained security footage that illustrates how the suspect, prior to the grim act, briefly interacted with the decedent before they produced a firearm and fired upon the young man as he attempted to flee.
Tragically, the victim has been identified as Wayne McDaniel, a mere 18 years of age, hailing from Northwest, DC. The investigation is ongoing, with the suspect's image captured on surveillance and distributed in the hopes that the public might aid in their prompt identification and apprehension. The MPD has put forth a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in McDaniel's tragic death.
As the MPD urges any individuals with knowledge of the incident to come forward, they have been clear in their directive: to take no direct action themselves but to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or anonymously text the tip to the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
