In a recent effort to combat violent crime in the nation's capital, authorities reported seizing 53 firearms from last Monday to this Monday. This initiative, as outlined in a Metropolitan Police Department release, seeks to diminish the presence of illegal firearms in Washington, D.C., and to assuage the community's concern about armed violence.
The recovered weapons range from handguns to assault rifles, including several 9mm "Ghost Guns," which lack serial numbers and can complicate law enforcement tracking efforts. Firearms were confiscated from various neighborhoods across the district, with a significant number of arrests connected to the illegal possession and incidents involving felon possession of these dangerous weapons.
Among the notable recoveries was a Glock 19 9mm caliber handgun and an Aero Precision M4E1 assault rifle, found in the 2200 block of Minnesota Avenue, Southeast. Another case involved the recovery of multiple firearms, including a Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun and another "Ghost Gun," in the 3800 block of Ninth Street, Southeast, leading to the arrest of multiple individuals, including juveniles.
For instance, anonymous tips have played a role in aiding police actions, and citizens are incentivized with potential rewards of up to $2,500 for information leading to arrests and seizures.
