Miami Beach residents may soon receive text alerts to move their parked cars before they get towed if the city commission approves a new proposal. Commissioner Alex Fernandez is leading the initiative, which aims to offer a 15-minute grace period for certain parking infractions, helping residents avoid the costs and inconvenience of towing, according to NBC Miami.

However, the alerts will only apply to Miami Beach residents who have registered in the city's parking system and provided a phone number. The notifications will only be sent for non-life safety violations, meaning immediate tows will still occur for violations like parking in fire lanes or disabled spots, as reported by VIN News.

If a car is moved in time, residents can avoid towing fees, which are typically cheaper than the cost of towing. The current towing rate for residents is $150, while non-residents are charged over $400. This proposal could further reduce costs, based on a similar system successfully used in San Francisco.

Operators of the city’s two major towing companies, Beach Towing and Tremont Towing, have not commented on the proposal. The resolution will be reviewed tomorrow. If approved, the system is expected to cost about $20,000 to set up, with annual maintenance costs around $7,500. "The cost of implementing this notification is minimal compared to the benefit of saving residents from unnecessary frustration," Fernandez told The Miami Herald.
