Rafael Antonio Saldana, a Miami-Dade County resident, has been sentenced to 38 years in federal prison following his conviction on multiple child exploitation charges. The verdict, which arrived in October 2024 after a jury trial, confirmed Saldana's criminal activities – he had solicited sexually explicit materials from minors and arranged to meet them for sex. The crimes involved three victims, aged 14, 16, and 17, respectively. One incident included an aborted rendezvous at a local McDonald’s with the intent to take the youngest victim to his home for sexual activities.
However, Saldana was met not by the minor but by law enforcement officials, thus thwarting his plan. The arrest led to the discovery of over sixty images of child sexual exploitation in his possession. The prosecutors were able to subsequently convict Saldana on three counts of attempted enticement of a minor and other related charges involving the production, receipt, and possession of exploitative images. In a statement to the public, U.S. Attorney Hayden O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida was joined by acting special agent in charge Jose R. Figueroa of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz to announce the sentencing.
The case was part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a national initiative to aggressively combat child exploitation. Launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice, PSC aims to utilize a concerted approach, marshalling local, state, and federal resources to precisely identify and prosecute offenders while seeking to quickly effectively rescue victims. Resources and additional information about the initiative can be found on the Department of Justice's website, as mentioned in the press release.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Audrey Pence Tomanelli and Arielle Klepach were credited with prosecuting the case that led to Saldana's lengthy prison term. Public encouragement has been made for anyone with details about child exploitation to step forward and confidentially report this information to authorities via the (877) 4-HSI-TIP hotline. Further details related to Saldana's case can be accessed on the Southern District of Florida's district court website and the PACER system, under case number 23-cr-20308.
