As the anniversary of the Ukraine invasion comes upon us, community members are gearing up to show their unwavering support for the Eastern European nation. One local political figure, Alderman Peter Burgelis, stands among the ranks of those raising their voices in solidarity. So, the third year since the incursion will be marked by a rally in Milwaukee, drawing together individuals to honor the endurance and courage of the Ukrainian people.
The gathering, slated for tomorrow from 1 to 3 p.m. at 941 E. Wisconsin Ave, is not just a memorial but a podium for advocacy. Organized by Wisconsin Ukrainians, Inc., the rally promises speeches from key members of the community such as Burgelis, as well as moments for collective reflection through community prayers. Honoring those who've defended their homeland, the event also stresses the significance of ongoing U.S. support. The public will learn ways to further back Ukraine in its pursuit for autonomy, as the doors of participation are open to all.
Burgelis' involvement in this cause is deeply personal, for he is himself of Latvian descent, his family having fled from the grips of Soviet oppression during World War II. They found their haven in Milwaukee back in the 1950s, a history that no doubt infuses the Alderman's current advocacies with a profound sense of duty. His track record precedes him; while serving as a Milwaukee County Supervisor, he penned resolution 22-556 back in 2022 that amplified local efforts helping Ukrainians and sharply criticized the hostilities initiated by Russian forces, as reported by the official statement.
