In a concerted effort to clamp down on youth-related violent crime, Minneapolis Police Department's Curfew Task Force has once again demonstrated its effectiveness through the recent apprehension of six juveniles accused of a violent carjacking. The incident occurred on February 7th, when a 62-year-old woman was carjacked by a group of youths. The suspects, ages 11 to 15, were captured following a collaboration between the MPD and various law enforcement partners, including the MN State Patrol, as reported by the Minneapolis Police Department.
The carjacking took place in Northeast Minneapolis before the stolen vehicle was located in the 4th Precinct, a breakthrough partly attributed to tips from the juveniles' parents. The resulting chase saw the suspects taking refuge in a nearby garage, where they were found hiding after a coordinated law enforcement response. Chief Brian O’Hara praised the teamwork, saying, "This was great collaborative work that interrupted the recurring criminal behavior of a group of juveniles." One of the detainees, a 15-year-old boy, has a pending charge of attempted murder.
Since its formation in August 2024, the Curfew Task Force has been working proactively to engage at-risk youth. Significantly, the initiative has resulted in a 66% reduction in the number of new youth offenders of violent crime and nearly a 40% drop in all juvenile violent crime and auto theft cases, according to the MPD press release. The data underlines an effective approach that includes curfew enforcement, home visits, and connecting troubled juveniles and their families with necessary support resources.
Despite these advancements, Chief O'Hara points to a persisting challenge within the system. In a statement echoed by several community leaders, he noted, "the gap that allows juveniles to cycle in and out of the system remains." He underscored the need for heightened urgency among civic and governmental leaders to address juvenile crime comprehensively, "The current system is failing, putting our youth, their victims, and even our officers at risk."
The efforts of the MPD and their law enforcement partners reflect a growing concern over juvenile delinquency, focusing resources on preemptive action and rehabilitation to help curb the trend. With continued community engagement and resource allocation, the hope is to foster a safer environment for Minneapolis’s citizens and its youth.
