Springfield residents and I-44 commuters should prepare for upcoming roadwork. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced a public meeting to discuss the forthcoming Interstate 44 widening project in Greene County. According to MoDOT, construction is set to begin soon, with plans to expand I-44 to six lanes between Missouri Route 13 (Kansas Expressway) and U.S. Route 65.

Interested parties are invited to attend the drop-in meeting on February 25, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., at Crossway Baptist Church, located at 2900 N Barnes Ave, Springfield. Attendees can visit at any time during the event to learn more about the construction's expected traffic impacts, the contractor's schedule, and the overall scope of the project. MoDOT plans to keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction during construction, but drivers should expect delays during periods of high traffic volume.

According to MoDOT, key elements of the upgrade include adding a new lane in each direction of the interstate and replacing several bridges along the corridor. Pedestrian infrastructure will also be improved with the construction of an underpass and trail upgrades east of Grant Avenue. Additionally, a section of the interstate will be resurfaced to enhance the road’s durability and longevity.

MoDOT has contracted Capital Paving & Construction LLC for the project, with the construction costs settling at $70.7 million. Financial backing comes from $13.4 million in General Revenue funds provided by the General Assembly and the Governor’s Office. The project aims to reach completion by May 2027, leading to a significant transition period for Springfield's commuters and visitors who regularly traverse this section of I-44.

For those unable to attend the in-person meeting, project information will be available online, allowing interested parties to have their questions addressed. MoDOT encourages individuals without internet access to contact their Southwest District Office for alternative methods to obtain project information and provide feedback. This public meeting offers an opportunity for community involvement and preparation as Springfield plans to expand its transportation capacity.
