Montgomery County is improving transportation options for federal workers returning to the office. The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is offering enhanced Ride On bus services that travel across the county and into Washington, D.C. Additionally, riders who use Metro buses or rail can ride the Ride On buses for free on the same day, according to a release from the Montgomery County website.

County Executive Marc Elrich highlights the benefits of public transport, noting that Ride On buses are not only affordable at $1 fares but also faster. MCDOT Director Chris Conklin reported that weekday ridership increased from 46,000 in 2023 to 58,000 in 2024.

The Montgomery County is also working with federal agencies to expand parking near federal offices, making it easier for workers to switch between cars and buses. Federal offices like the NIH, Walter Reed, and the FDA are well-served by bus routes and transit options, including the Metro Red Line and MTA Commuter Buses.

MCDOT Ride On operates four transit lines, and their Trip Planner App helps users find the quickest route by combining various transportation modes. A recent two-year study, Ride On Reimagined, analyzed public transit needs, and new bus services are expected to launch this summer, according to the press release.

MCDOT also emphasizes the health benefits of using public transit, such as less stress, more walking, and the ability to multitask. Public transport can also be more cost-effective compared to gas, car maintenance, and parking. For more details, visit MCDOT's website or follow their social media for updates.
