Montgomery County residents may see changes in tax credit eligibility, surveillance technology regulations, and environmental protections, as outlined by Council President Kate Stewart in an upcoming media session. The session is scheduled for next Monday at 11:30 a.m., during which Stewart will discuss new legislative developments via a Zoom call, as announced in a recent press release from the Montgomery County Council.

Stewart is set to present Bill 3-25, which seeks to raise the income eligibility limit for the County’s Homeowners’ Tax Credit from $60,000 to $75,000 and increase the net worth threshold from $200,000 to $250,000. She highlights that these changes could provide additional support to homeowners, particularly those feeling the pressure of the area's high cost of living.

Another significant proposal is Bill 4-25, co-led with Councilmember Kristin Mink, which introduces checks on the County's use of surveillance technology, demanding impact reports and regulations for new acquisitions. This bill emerges amidst growing concerns over privacy and the implications of surveillance on civil liberties.

In a move to support sustainability, Stewart is leading the 'Bring Your Own Bag' bill, which seeks to ban single-use, plastic carryout bags to combat plastic waste. Council President Stewart also plans to shed light on the efforts of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, especially relevant during Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

Media representatives interested in attending should RSVP by emailing Lucia Jimenez at [email protected] by 10 a.m. next Monday to receive the Zoom login details. The public can watch the proceedings live on the Council’s Facebook page.
