Mount Charleston residents have a reason to look forward to the upcoming school year following the Clark County School Board's decision to approve a $7.8 million contract for repairs to Lundy Elementary School. According to News 3 LV, the school has been closed since August 2023 due to damage from Tropical Storm Hilary, and the community is anticipating its reopening in August. The board initially decided against repairing the school, but a temporary trustee reintroduced the issue, leading to the approval.
Amid the discourse on budget and community needs, one trustee, Lydia Dominquez, expressed her fiscal vigilance, "I just want to make sure that we are utilizing the taxpayer's money correctly so, and we're going and putting it back to where it was," she told News 3 LV. An amendment based on community input led by Dominguez removed the inclusion of a kiln room from the project, aiming to manage costs more efficiently. Meanwhile, the district has initiated a survey to explore the addition of pre-kindergarten classes at Lundy, which currently serves kindergarten through fifth grade.
Chris Giunchigliani, a former Clark County Commissioner and resident who actively campaigned for the school's repair, relayed the development to fellow mountain dwellers. "It's thrilling, and it's actually the last vote that they have to take," Giunchigliani said in an interview with News 3 LV.
For parents like Anthony Armas, the school's close-knit environment is indispensable for his son, a third-grader. "He just likes the closer-knit environment, you know, the school with the friends that he has up here," Armas told News 3 LV. As the first day of school approaches, the district is reviewing its insurance claims to secure additional funds for the repairs, as noted in the recent board meeting.
The school is central to the mountain community, and both residents and officials are preparing for its reopening. FOX5 Vegas also highlighted the community's support for the school’s reopening, showing the strong collective spirit driving their efforts.
