In response to forecasted severe weather conditions, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson declared a state of emergency, with severe weather shelters slated to open tonight. According to Multnomah County, the emergency status is effective from 6 p.m. today and is designed to protect residents from potential snow and cold.
Three shelters will be available: Cook Plaza in Gresham, Hollywood Shelter in Portland, and NW 14th Avenue Shelter in Portland, supplementing approximately 3,200 existing year-round and winter-only beds. The opening of the shelters aligns with a collaborative effort between Multnomah County employees and service provider partners. "Severe weather shelters save lives during the very coldest and harshest nights of the year," Vega Pederson said, as per Multnomah County. "Our goal with the additional shelter we open today is making sure that there’s a bed, comfort and support for everyone who lacks a safe, warm, dry place."
To assist those needing a warm place, TriMet announced it will not deny rides to anyone traveling to or from shelters during this time, even if they cannot pay the fare. The transportation agency requests that such individuals notify bus operators of their destination to ensure they reach the shelters safely. Additionally, 211info is on hand 24/7 to help identify shelters and provide details on transportation options.
