In the wake of a potential tragedy averted, the community of Nevada County comes together to commend the bravery of Deputy Paul McCallum, a School Resource Officer (SRO) hailed for his rapid response to a school shooting threat at Nevada Union High School. The Nevada County Sheriff's Office took to social media to sing praises for McCallum, who managed to locate and detain one of the suspects involved within four minutes of the initial threat. A seasoned veteran, McCallum served with the Grass Valley Police Department before joining the ranks of the Sheriff's Office back in 2020.

With nine years of peacekeeping in the county, McCallum's current mission has centered on safeguarding students and faculty members at Nevada Union High School for the past three years. “I have three kids at NU and have known a lot of students through my kids via sports, being a chaperone at different school events and overnight field trips. Being an SRO gives me an opportunity to be actively involved with my kids. I also get to help other students and their families. I have a great working relationship with school administrators and we're constantly looking at ways to improve safety. At the end of the day, I hope I've made a positive impact on our kids and helped them to make good or better choices and that they feel safe coming to school knowing I'll do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe,” McCallum stated in a social media post from the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office, along with families and community members of Nevada County, extend their thanks to SRO Paul McCallum for his vigilant service in protecting the loved ones within their school's halls.
