Newton County Manager Harold Cooper was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence over the weekend. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that Cooper was taken into custody early Saturday morning after deputies observed his white BMW driving erratically near Middle Ridge Elementary School.
According to the Covington News, the arresting officer from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office saw Cooper’s vehicle crossing over the double solid line and repeatedly hitting rumble strips. This led to Cooper being pulled over at a BP station off Highway 81, where he underwent a field sobriety test, the results of which have not been disclosed.
Cooper faces charges of driving under the influence and improper lane usage, both of which are misdemeanor offenses. Cooper had been appointed as county manager in April 2023 after a competitive selection process, which included candidates like former Washington, D.C. Deputy Mayor Lucinda Babers.
After his arrest, Cooper was released on a recognizance bond, with a court appearance scheduled for March 25. His $150,000-a-year contract runs for two years, and the arrest raises questions about his ability to carry out his duties effectively.
