North Carolina's Governor Josh Stein has put forward a significant request for federal assistance in recovering from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Helene. Yesterday, Stein, alongside Senators Tillis and Budd, emphasized the need for a substantial federal investment to aid the restoration of western North Carolina, a region which continues to grapple with the storm's aftermath. The governor is advocating for an infusion of $19 billion in federal funds, as reported by the Office of Governor.
According to Governor Stein, the scenario in western North Carolina remains dire; Hurricane Helene inflicted nearly $60 billion in damages across the state. His public appeal underscores the harsh reality that despite the combined efforts of federal, state, and various sector partners in the immediate response phase, the requirements for recovery extend far beyond what has been provided. "We must support home rebuilding, restore critical infrastructure, keep businesses open, shore up local governments, and reduce impacts from future natural disasters," Stein stated in his announcement on the Office of the Governor's website.
The existing financial contributions towards the recovery effort include more than $1 billion from the state of North Carolina itself. Governor Stein has also committed to collaboration with the state legislature to secure additional resources that are necessary for the comprehensive rebuilding. This move suggests a bipartisan endeavor to address the severity of the disaster's impact and the long-term needs of western North Carolina's residents and economy.
In detailing the purpose of the requested funds, Governor Stein outlined priority areas such as home reconstruction, infrastructure repair, and economic sustenance, while also calling attention to preventive measures against future disasters. The funding would not merely serve as a patch to the present state of damage but is intended also to reinforce the state against future adversity. "With continued commitment of the federal and state governments, we will enable the people of western North Carolina to come back stronger than ever before," Governor Stein told those in attendance at the meeting with Senators Tillis and Budd, as noted on the Office of the Governor's website.
