The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois reportedly secured a hefty sum exceeding $100 million from civil, criminal, and asset forfeiture actions throughout the Fiscal Year 2024. The news, announced by Acting United States Attorney Morris Pasqual, underscores a strong year for the department in financial recoveries.

Breaking down the figures, around $23.9 million was collected through criminal actions, while civil actions accounted for a further $6.4 million. The lion's share, however, came from asset forfeiture actions, amassing approximately $70.4 million. In combined efforts with other U.S. Attorney's Offices and Department of Justice sectors, the Northern District also contributed to the collection of $62.2 million in jointly pursued cases, according to a statement on the Department of Justice website.

"Our attorneys and staff place a high priority on recovering funds for the federal treasury and victims of federal crimes," Pasqual stated. Adding a note on future commitments, Pasqual elaborated, "Our office will continue to responsibly safeguard taxpayer resources while delivering a valuable return to the citizens of our district."

There is a notable balance in how these recovered funds are allocated. Restitution is made to the victims of certain federal crimes, providing relief for those who have suffered physical or financial harm. On the other hand, collections from criminal fines and assessments are funneled towards the Department of Justice's Crime Victims Fund, which then distributes the monies to various federal and state victim compensation and assistance programs.
