Outdoor enthusiasts looking to step away from their screens and dive into nature had a chance to lace up their hiking boots for the annual 3.5-mile Winter Hike Series event in Ohio. Yesterday, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Natural Areas and Preserves invited the public to explore the Little Miami River as it carves through the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve. According to the official ODNR website, the hike kicked off at 9 a.m. with staggered starts for multiple groups and concluded at 10 a.m.
At the Day Lodge at John Bryan State Park, hikers were promised an educational experience about the place’s cultural history, geology, and ecology. The trail was set to follow the upstream path of the Little Miami River and meander into the heart of the village of Clifton. Throughout the journey, participants were encouraged to adequately bundle up for the winter weather, strap on sturdy shoes, and keep hydrated by bringing water to ensure they could comfortably and safely enjoy their trek through the scenic Ohio wilderness.
The draw of Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve doesn't halt at its picturesque cliffs or the serene river flow. Designated a National Natural Landmark, this area houses geological marvels alongside habitats home to unique species, including hemlock trees and the elusive snow trillium.
