Oklahoma City has unveiled its latest attraction, the OKANA Resort and Waterpark, and leadership is optimistic about its impact on the local economy. Kristy Gillenwater, president and CEO of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber, projects that the resort will contribute around $1 billion over the next decade. On Friday, the grand opening marked the end of months of anticipation as the facility opened its doors to the public after a significant investment and extensive development phase, KOCO reported.
According to Gillenwater, the opening of the 404-key hotel, the result of a nearly $400 million investment, is expected not only to draw the attention of the nation, but also stakeholders from around the globe. OKANA Resort and Waterpark is estimated to have a $97 million economic impact in its first year alone. The resort features attractions including a water park, an arcade named Okanarama, a laser tag arena, and dining options, which have been designed to serve as a long-term entertainment destination for both visitors and the Oklahoma City community, NEWS 9 stated.
Mayor David Holt described the significance of the opening during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "Never again will we be a city that you just pass through," he declared, hinting at the transformation OKANA aims to bring to Oklahoma City’s reputation as a tourist and leisure destination. This statement, obtained by KFOR, reflects a longstanding vision to propel the city into a new era of economic and cultural vibrancy.
Alongside the amusement and relaxation amenities, OKANA also plans to foster a community spirit, with Laura Rudicel, OKANA's director of marketing, emphasizing the resort's role in enriching lives. "It's emotional," Rudicel told NEWS 9, noting the exhaustive efforts leading up to the inauguration. From the game hall to the spa, each feature has been designed, with versatility to cater to a range of preferences and age groups, ensuring a broad appeal. Visitors can partake in free activities such as crafting an "aquarium in a jar," a unique take-home memento.
With the debut of OKANA, Oklahoma City steps into the limelight, positioned to garner tourism revenue and possibly revise the city's narrative as a mere waypoint. Special promotional codes offer up to 30% off bookings, with a variety of passes available for those not looking to extend their stay overnight – ushering in a new chapter of leisure and economic prosperity for the region.
