Tragedy struck last night in Orange County as sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man during a reported burglary. The incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on the 100 block of W. Castle Street, as deputies were dispatched in response to the burglary, according to a statement reported by FOX 35 Orlando. On arrival, the deputies, watching from the backyard, witnessed two men in a physical fight inside the home, one brandishing a knife.
The sheriff's office shared in their release, "One of the men was holding a knife and did not comply with several commands from deputies to drop it." Following the man's refusal to comply, two deputies proceeded to discharge their service weapons, striking the individual. The Orange County Sheriff's spokesperson also noted, as reported by ClickOrlando, that despite efforts to have the man surrender the knife, the deputies had to use lethal force ultimately.
After the shooting, deputies provided medical aid until paramedics arrived. The man was then transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The individuals' names have not been disclosed, as the case remains under investigation. Both deputies who fired their weapons have been placed on temporary, paid administrative leave. This is a standard practice in shootings involving law enforcement, indicating neither confirmation of wrongdoing nor immediate exoneration.
