An incident escalated to violence last night in Orange County when deputies shot a man they claimed was armed with a knife and had threatened suicide. According to the ClickOrlando report, the Sheriff's Office received a call around 5:15 p.m. from the individual, who then walked out of his bedroom, knife in hand, and ignored multiple orders to disarm. In a home at 6803 Merganser Drive, deputies were confronted by the man, whose relative had initially allowed them inside.
The situation, persisting at the residence, saw deputies retreat from the advancing man, aiming to de-escalate the tension. "The deputies gave several commands to (the) man to drop the knife, as they retreated backwards and out of the house," a release described, as detailed by ClickOrlando. The man's noncompliance led deputies to shoot, hitting him several times. Following the event, deputies offered aid, and the man was rushed to the hospital for surgery.
WFTV further clarifies that the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on temporary paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol during such investigations. Having been transported to the hospital, the man is currently undergoing surgery. No information on his condition post-operation has been released at this time.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken charge of the investigation to ascertain the particulars surrounding the shooting.
