Recent developments in the effort to bring an end to the war in Ukraine have yielded a mix of hope and trepidation among those closely following the conflict. In the latest turn, a pivotal meeting has been announced to occur without the participation of Ukrainian officials—a move that has alarmed both the Ukrainian community and its leaders. According to a report by ABC15, Irene Amrine, an active member in the Ukrainian fight, voiced her concerns, stating, "It'll be a huge slap in the face in what Ukraine has already given up in these three years."
The controversial talks, scheduled for tomorrow in Saudi Arabia, signify a potential shift in U.S. policy towards Russia. The summit will bring together top officials from both the U.S. and Russia, as per a statement by the KULR8. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are among the attendees expected to try to restore bilateral relations and lay the groundwork for a Ukrainian settlement—yet without Ukraine at the table.
Kyiv officials, along with their world allies, have been taken aback by the announcement and scramble to ensure their interests are represented. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Ukrainian diaspora has expressed alarm and disapproval of the developments. "You know, Ukraine has been in war for over 11 years. We're coming up on the third-year anniversary of the full-scale invasion next week," Amrine told ABC15.
U.S. officials have also indicated that some of Ukraine's hopes may need to be tempered. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has stated that both the idea of Ukraine reclaiming all its territories and its membership in NATO are unlikely outcomes. Such comments are causing concern for Amrine and others who fear the negotiations could mainly be to favor Russia. She emphasized to ABC15 that forcing Ukraine to let go of its territory would be a betrayal, "That a lot of this.. a lot of this bloodshed was in vain," said Amrine.
President Trump has assured that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will have a role in any peace negotiations, a statement that holds little comfort for Ukrainian stakeholders given their exclusion from the imminent talks. In response to the announced meeting, Zelenskyy insisted that Ukraine's lack of involvement means the meeting would "yield no results," as reported by KULR8. With heightened tensions and stakes, only time will tell how these developments will unfold and what the implications may be for the future of Ukraine.
