Construction updates are rolling in for Colorado Springs residents as the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) gears up for significant overnight works on Powers Boulevard. Starting tomorrow, stretches of the highway will be off-limits to make way for the installation of bridge girders, an essential step in the CO 21 Powers Boulevard and Airport Road Interchange Project.
The necessary but inconvenient closures are slated to occur over four consecutive nights and will only impede one direction of Powers Boulevard at a time, with full traffic restoration in place each morning before rush hour, CDOT anticipates that the overnight closures planned from Feb. 20 to Feb. 23 and will trigger some detours and potential delays for the nighttime drivers.
According to CDOT, southbound lanes near East Platte Avenue and northbound sections at Airport Road will encounter closures throughout this four-night span. Specifically, southbound Powers will close from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Feb. 20 and Feb. 22, and the northbound lane will shut from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Feb. 21 and Feb. 23. Weather conditions remain a variable factor that may adjust this schedule, with real-time updates available through message boards around the construction site.
Duly marked detour routes will be established to assist motorists in navigating around the closures, for southbound traffic, the detour advises exiting at East Platte Avenue, then moving along Academy Boulevard and onto Airport Road, whereas, northbound travelers at Airport Road will find their reroute heading east towards the on-ramp at Stewart Avenue, CDOT also recommends an alternative path for those heading to the Colorado Springs Airport, directing them along Academy Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard.
