Residents of Oxnard experienced a rare weather event as a weak tornado touched down, causing damage in the local mobile home park. The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado struck around 3:30 p.m. Thursday amidst the strongest storm of the season, bringing with it powerful winds that reached speeds of 75 to 90 mph, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. The tornado reportedly tracked from the Country Club Mobile Estates to Ocean-Aire Mobile Estates, leaving a trail of destruction, including damaged carports and roofs of some homes.
The situation was daunting, as "The house shook," and "It was hard to know what the rumbling was. Of course, it go louder and louder. Sounded like something hit the top of the house," Jim Ross, a resident, told NBC Los Angeles.
Gerry Villegas, another resident, relayed her experience to CBS News, saying, "The mobile home, it started to shake very strongly, and things, you could see awnings, parts of the porch awning flying by." The wind damage was not isolated to Oxnard, with reports of previous tornadoes causing significant disruption in Montebello and other areas in Southern California, as NWS teams classified a tornado in March 2023 as an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.
"No injuries were reported," but approximately 12 trailers sustained damage in the tornado’s path, FOX LA shared.
