An off-duty corrections deputy from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office was fatally shot last night in what authorities are calling a "targeted incident." As reported by WFLA, the shooting took place in Belle Glade around 7:32 p.m., leaving the 39-year-old deputy dead following an emergency transport to the hospital, despite the lifesaving attempts of medical personnel.
Law enforcement responded to the scene at the 1400 block of NW Avenue D after receiving reports of gunfire, the deputy was then quickly taken to St. Mary’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, and even though officials have held back the release of the deputy's name and details regarding a potential suspect, the attack is currently being considered as deliberated against the officer. "We are distraught to say the least," the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office expressed in a public statement, encapsulating the heavy loss felt within the community, ABC News reported further details including that the deputy had served for three years.
According to FOX 13 News, a procession honoring the fallen deputy was organized Monday night, escorting the body from the hospital to the Medical Examiner's Office, a ceremonial gesture epitomizing respect and mourning amongst law enforcement for their fallen comrade, though no additional information regarding the shooting or investigation has surfaced at this time, the sheriff's office has assured that more details will be disclosed when available.
