Palm Beach County has stepped into the spotlight with its commitment to creating safer, more connected streets. Mayor Maria G. Marino represented the region at the 12th Annual Safe Streets Summit on February 7, where she received the Complete Streets Community Award for the county's efforts to enhance transportation safety and accessibility. The award is a testament to the county's ongoing work to design and implement streets that cater to all users – drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit riders alike, as mentioned on the county's official website.
Hosted by the Palm Beach Transportation Planning Agency, this year's summit revolved around the theme "Mobility at the Heart of It All." Discussions and presentations underscored investment in mobility as a crucial factor in lifting the quality of life and driving economic growth in Southeast Florida. An array of national speakers, along with public officials and technical experts converged at the event, trading insights into the crafting and completion of street projects. The summit also put a spotlight on creating connected communities, and the summit further explored routes to bolster alternative transportation options, including walking, biking, and transit services – a move signaling a pivot towards sustainability and inclusivity in urban planning.
While accepting the award, Mayor Marino praised the county's dedication to the Complete Streets philosophy, highlighting its importance. She noted that investing in well-designed streets is not just about improving transportation but also about building vibrant, livable communities that drive economic growth, according to Palm Beach County's official news release.
